Our Plans Include

Budding Artist's Studio

An engaging space for children to enjoy the process of creation through a variety of mixed media. This experience will be organized around particular art forms such as painting, drawing, sculpting and collaging.

Sound Studio

The joy of singing, dancing, and playing instruments will come to life as children explore the science behind sound.

Main Street Shoppes

Here children will be able to take on the role of people they see in their own home town such as the banker, shopkeeper and grocer. Children will develop cognitive, physical and social skills through interactive role play.

Building District

Design, build, remodel, repeat. Children will learn basic concepts of engineering and construction such as motion, balance, force and spatial relations as they work together to make their very own architectural designs.

Rockbridge Railways Train Table

Perfect for the littlest train enthusiast; an elaborate wooden train track with train car galore.

Actor's Theater

Our own mini playhouse will bring dramatic role play and singing to life. Children can put on a full scale production with costumes, lighting and sound.

  • Our Humble Beginnings...

Discovery Heights Children's Museum was founded in January 2017 by an enthusiastic group of parents and educators in Lexington, VA. Our goal is to provide the children of Lexington, Rockbridge County and surrounding areas with an indoor location for imaginative play experiences as well as creating spaces dedicated to science, technology, engineering, art, math, music, and theater.

  • A Museum Is Born...

We envision a physically and intellectually stimulating atmosphere where children are encouraged to learn and explore the world around them through hands-on exhibits that foster creativity, experimentation, camaraderie, thoughtfulness and invention. This inclusive atmosphere will be made accessible to children with varying abilities and will support the greater community by providing a broad cultural experience where children can learn about their diverse community and the changing scientific world around them.

  • Our Future...

Our master plan includes creating spaces for art, music, theater, and science/engineering exploration, having a large space dedicated to creative play, including a train table, a shopping district, and a special mini-discoverer area for kids 2 and under.

Currently, we are seeking donations for our Initiate Discovery Capital Campaign. These donations will go toward designing and building out an incredible space. The Museum’s proposed location is a 4800-square-foot building with an open floor plan that is ideally suited to this purpose. The building is within easy walking distance of both Lexington’s Main Street District and surrounding family-filled neighborhoods.

We need your help in creating this magical space. From small gifts to major charitable contributions, every donation will help make this dream a reality. Discovery Heights Children's Museum is a member organization of Fine Arts In Rockbridge (FAIR). FAIR is a nonprofit ARTS organization that relies on fundraising, grants and the generous donations of time and money from its community members and businesses to fulfill its mission. Please consider making a tax deductible financial contribution to FAIR via PayPal in support of Discovery Heights Children's Museum.
